We all know about wingers: they can have a brilliant patch followed by a mediocre patch: that’s the nature of the position. So if you’re going to have two wingers in the side, you’ve got to have three in the squad, and we’ve now got three of the best at this level. What’s more Kirk Watts (recently resigned from Bromley) can play equally well on the left or the right.

I’ve set the agenda then: if you score, we’ll score one more. Playing an attacking game, though, doesn’t mean you can forget about the defence, and I’m very pleased with the acquisition of Jay Conroy, from Chelmsford, who was very sought after by a number of different clubs. He’s a 6’1” right-footed full back who’s decent on the ball, good in the tackle and very athletic. I’ve been tracking his progress for a couple of years now, and I’m very pleased we’ve managed to get him. At 21 he’s a good age as well - by that I mean he’s old enough to have developed the experience and physical presence you need to play at this level, but he’s young enough to have a bright future ahead of him.

Next week I’ll talk about how the first friendly of the season - against Fulham - went. In the meantime we’re looking forward to the visit of Southampton. They play a good game, and they know we do, which is one of the reasons they agreed to the friendly. After a summer of sunshine and rain the pitch is looking lovely, and we’re raring to go. Enjoy the season ahead.

Welcome back to the Dripping Pan, rather a nice spot to watch a
