They just paid a million for their keeper, but they could have spent ten and he still wouldn’t have had a hope.

Juke Box could have scored just before that, too. Tom Davis, another new signing, reverse-passed the ball over his head and Andy Drury’s shot grazed the crossbar with the keeper, again, beaten. Tom can do a bit of everything. He can sit and he can bomb on. He’s got a lot of energy, he can put his foot in and he can see a pass. He made a pretty good start.

I was very, very pleased with Jay Conroy’s contribution. He’s a right back and he reminds me of a young Dean Hooper, with a bit more control. He heads it, he can tackle, and he passes the ball lovely. He’s a great athlete and he’s a good size. He’s not afraid to put his foot in, either. The door’s not closed yet, and I’ve looked at a few trialists, too. There are a few youngsters, and Ross Trevelen and Sam Tucknell both look very useful. There’s also Brian Perez, a Gibraltar international who flew in for the game. What a prospect. He’s 19 and, though I don’t say this about many, I can see him going all the way to the top. A good start then. It’s nice to beat a Premiership side, but what mattered more was they way we performed, and the promising contributions of the players, especially the new ones, who settled in really well. Next stop West Ham.
