Name: Mike Turner.
Profession: I’m officially a retired academic. I taught English and Drama at Anglia Polytechnic University for many years. Now I do lots of things that I don’t get paid for. I direct plays for Lewes Little Theatre (most recently The Hostage) and I’m the newsletter editor for them. I’m also a Town Councillor for the Castle Ward since I was elected in May.
Are you local? I was born in Crowborough and I lived in several places whilst I was working, but I’ve lived in Lewes for ten years and I like to think of myself as local. I’m Sussex born and bred anyway - ‘strong in the arm and weak in the head!’
What do you like about Lewes? I like the fact that it’s a town with a castle on the hill and a river at the foot like a French Chateau town, though, instead of a vineyard there’s the Harvey’s brewery. And, before I came to live here, my wife and I would come and hunt for antiques as we’re both something of collectors. I also like the culture of the town - it’s alternative and yet inclusive.
What do you think it lacks? A cinema and a youth club. As a councillor I am keen to support any new facilities for the youth of the town, so, I’m pleased about the skate park and also the talk of re-opening the Landport youth centre, which would be really good for the town.
What’s your favourite pub? The Lewes Arms. I was in a difficult position during the boycott though. I play for a crib team that meets above the pub, so, whilst we were playing, we would drink lemonade upstairs and then go for a pint in the Elephant afterwards.
What’s your poison? Harvey’s bitter. And red wine - a good Shiraz or Syrah. I’m actually a partner in an Essex vineyard although ironically it only produces sparkling and white wines.
Waitrose or Tesco? Both. Tesco for general shopping. Waitrose for tastier selected items. And Turner’s Farm shop on the Broyle, Ringmer for meat. I also grow my own vegetables in my allotment.
