What do you think about traffic wardens? Lewes needed some control over its traffic, there were too many people ‘stopping’ outside the shops and claiming not to be parking. But the current system is too strict in terms of time, and it costs too much.
Which newspaper do you read? The Guardian. And the Sussex Express to keep updated about the town.
What’s your favourite local landmark? I love the Downs. I’m a member of a walking group and being able to walk on the Downs was another reason why I moved to Lewes. I also love the War Memorial, especially the beautiful angel carvings. It’s ironic that ‘The Kiss’ was considered too erotic for Lewes at the time when the memorial is just as much so in its own right.
What did you have for breakfast? This morning I cooked scrambled eggs, bacon and tomatoes for a treat because our American cousins were leaving. With black coffee to drink.
Are you pro or anti the Phoenix Development? I’m pro developing the area. Firstly I think we need to tidy it up. At the moment it’s a messy light industrial area and it could be brought into the town more. But also I think the only way this area will get flood protection is if a commercial developer takes over and is therefore required by the council to provide flood defences. I’m not sure if it will ever happen if we wait for the Environmental Agency to do it. And though the government is releasing more funds they will be directed towards Sheffield and Gloucester now. We’re old news.
Recommend somewhere to eat out: I love Shelleys. I’m actually the organiser of the evening series, ‘Conversations with Shelleys’ there and it’s a great setting. I’d also recommend the Real Eating Co. We had a meal there this week and we all thought it was excellent. Our friends paid though, so I’ve no idea how much it costs. ER
