Good news, for a change. An area of high pressure has moved over Southern parts of England, and it looks like it will stubbornly refuse to budge for a good while. Predominantly blue skies, plenty of sunshine, temperatures reaching into the twenties. No rain, and the end of the wettest early summer since 1789.

The Sons of Katie Elder (Channel 4, Saturday, 4.15pm). Classic revenge-driven 60s Western starring Dean Martin, and a John Wayne who insisted on doing his own stunts despite a recent cancer op, and nearly died of pneumonia after being dragged through a river on the end of a rope.

Desert Island discs (Radio 4, Sun 11.15am)
This week’s guest is prolific screenwriter Andrew Davies (Tipping the Velvet, The Line of Beauty) most famous for bringing us the best BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice ever - including the sight of Colin Firth, fetchingly drenched, emerging from a lake.
