The latest picture from the Reeves collection shows the gentle curve of the Ouse past what is now the entrance to the Cuilfail Tunnel, taken some time in the forties. “It features the old barge ‘The Federation’, which was used as a houseboat until the end of the fifties, or just later,” says Tom Reeves. “Notice the cliff wall before the tunnel was cut into it, the Belisha Beacon on the right, and the advert for ‘Ronuk’ floor polish on the gable of the house in South Street. You can still get that stuff in Bunce’s.” Notice also the ‘bald’ nature of the Cuilfail estate, and the eye’s-left stateliness of the two swans, as they glide Newhavenwards. Reeves have an extensive archive of photos in their collection, which you can browse through at 159 High Street where the business has been running for four generations since 1858. If you know anything more about any of the photos we publish, don’t hesitate to contact us.
