This week’s picture was provided by editor Alex Leith, who took it from the ferry taking him from Le Havre to Newhaven on Monday. “I realised when I was on holiday that the sun would set during the journey back, so I was eager to take the shot,” he says. “As I was snapping the sun sinking into the sea, or appearing to anyway, my girlfriend was telling me about the ‘green flash’ phenomenon when the sun turns that colour for a second or two at sunset. Sadly it didn’t happen. But the orange sky made up for it. The picture, which I took the moment the sun disappeared, has not been doctored in any way. The dark sides framing the picture are from the bars of the balustrade around the deck.” We enjoy getting your pictures (we are anticipating a virtual sackload when people come back from their holidays) so keep sending them in.

No green flash. But plenty of orange clouds
