The latest picture from the Reeves collection shows the town’s third railway station, in 1885 shortly after it opened. It must have looked even more bizarre then than it does now. We like the cut of the taxis better in those days, though, despite the mess they leave on the road. And the fact that the taxi office and the dry cleaners were a telegraph and a parcel office, respectively. Apart from that, same old, same old. The station was built on the site of its predecessor (though on raised ground): the first incarnation was in Friars Walk, where the Magistrate Court now stands. Reeves have an extensive archive of photos in their collection, which you can browse through and buy at 159 High Street where the business has been running for four generations since 1858. If you know anything more about any of the photos we publish, don’t hesitate to contact us.
