Name: Nina Terrywood.
Business name: The Laurels.
How long have you been running the business? We opened eleven years ago at number 172 High Street, and two years later expanded in to 171.
What was on the premises before? Sketchleys dry cleaners was one half, whilst the other was an interesting combination, selling jewellery and teddy bears.
What do you sell? A customer once described us a mini department store. We’ve a wide selection of products, from designer ranges by Orla Keily and Cath Kidson, through to children’s clothing, cards, wrapping paper and toys. We even sell soap and shoes.
Why such an eclectic range? Our most important considerations when buying for the shop is the quality of design, so if something inspires us in design terms we’ll consider stocking it.
Who uses your shop? We have many regular customers who share our love of good design. We also have people who initially come in for the sewing courses we run, who then come back to buy things from the shop.
What’s the best thing about running your business? It gives me an outlet for creativity. Also it’s great working and living in the town, being part of its daily activity, whilst also only being a walk away from home, (and Dan, who is fantastic by the way).
What is your favourite shop in Lewes? I’m a fan of the great mix of independent traders - it’s particularly fantastic for food. My current favourites are Beckworths and Chaulas (I’m looking forward to trying the new restaurant). I also love the mad mix of things at Mays.
Recommend somewhere to eat out in Lewes? We love cooking, so most of our meals are at home. However, I occasionally go to Lazzati’s and would recommend it.
