Art - Fab Art down the Lane

Something unsettling seems to be happening to the art venues of Lewes. First Four Square Fine Arts shut up its Mount Road premises in September. Now news that the planned Christmas Art Trail has been cancelled follows hot on the heels of the announcement that Thebes Gallery will be closing its doors on the art world to accommodate District Council employees. “It feels as if Lewes is falling apart”, says Sylvia Hassell, who recently held one of the last exhibitions at the Thebes. “It’s so galling. So many of us wrote letters in protest at the Thebes’ closure, but you just sort of knew it was going to happen anyway.” Sylvia’s not going to accept the cancellation of the Art Trail lying down, though. She and Pauline Crook are planning to open up their shared Dairy studio as originally planned. “We were so disappointed and as we’d done all the preparation for the trail we thought we’d nothing to lose by going it alone.” I try to lure her into speculating as to why the trail was cancelled. “I really don’t know”, she says simply. “We were just told there wasn’t enough support for it.” The weekend’s open studio, however, will be positively brimming with festive cheer, by all accounts - complete with mulled wine and mince pies. There will be selections of Pauline and Sylvia’s paintings to buy as well as especially made Xmas cards, cushions and screen prints. ER
